“The number one goal is to demonstrate our continued investment in content”

Hector Fernandez, President for the Americas and EMEA at Aristocrat, gave an exclusive interview with Revista CASINO to talk about the company’s plans in the American region.

The gaming industry around the world has been one of the markets that took the hardest hit when the COVID-19 pandemic appeared, however, in recent months the numbers of land-based casinos in the American region have begun to show signs of recovery. Hector Fernandez, President for the Americas and EMEA at Aristocrat, gave an exclusive interview with Revista CASINO to talk about the company’s plans in the region and how the company has innovated its products during this time.

With vaccination against COVID-19 advancing in Latin America, what expectations does Aristocrat have for the gaming market on the region?

As a global business, we saw how COVID was impacting various parts of world at different times. Two years ago, we first saw COVID impacting APAC, and we were then able to take that information and put safeguards in place in our other regions ahead of COVID’s advance. As the recovery began in the U.S., we started seeing the business really thrive. We were driven by the fact that customers and players were at home missing their favorite forms of entertainment, and so far, there has been a good business rebound in U.S. It seems LatAm is about 12 months behind in recovery, particularly in terms of the rate of vaccination. We are bullish about in region as vaccination rates go up. We believe that players will come back and consume their favorite forms of entertainment, and we believe this is growth opportunity for Aristocrat.

With the confirmation of the return of face-to-face trade shows in America such as G2E in the United States and GAT Expo in Colombia, what are the company’s plans for the American region?

When COVID hit and tradeshows were canceled, we created what we called “Aristocrat Upfronts,” which were Zoom-driven studio versions of what we would have shown to customers in person at a tradeshow. Now as tradeshows return, we are taking what we learned from the Upfronts, and we are developing strategies for a stronger customer presence. Tradeshows are an important part of how we do business. As a company, we prefer to do business face-to-face, and tradeshows provide an opportunity to do that. We believe it is important to sit with customers and discuss future of their business, understand their needs, and explain how we bring the best value proposition as strategic partners. Now as we prepare for G2E, we want to showcase the greatest product portfolio in the industry. And while we will continue to participate, we will be mindful of how we spend our dollars. We have worked hard to get customer feedback and to determine what is most impactful for them at a tradeshow, and what are the follow ups that need to happen post-show. As tradeshows return, we will follow mantra of “Our people our customers our business.” That means, first and foremost, we consider whether a particular show is a safe place for our employees to participate, and we will implement all safeguards.

What are the company’s plans for this year’s edition of G2E?

Our number one goal as it pertains to G2E is to demonstrate to our customers our continued investment in content. It will be very clear to every attendee that Aristocrat has the greatest content this industry has ever seen. This is a result of making the choice during COVID to continue to invest in D&D. We knew this business was resilient and was going to come back, so we made that strategic choice to not slow that down. D&D development is like a train on a track – when you slow down a train, it’s hard to pick up that speed again. The result of the choices we made will be abundantly clear. We will show a lot of games and a rich depth of out content. We are hopeful our customers will reward us by continuing to choose us as their strategic partner.

In commercial terms, what has been the company’s balance in Latin America during the first half of 2021?

As we think about LatAm, we look at the different economies relative to COVID and reopening. We want to be in this business long term, and over the last 12-18 months, we knew it would be a slow recovery for the region. We shifted our focus from trying to sell units to focusing on what our customers needed during this time. We did a lot less talking and a lot more listening to understand our customers’ short- and long-term needs, across the region. We created several innovative commercial models to address the evolving state of recovery in LatAm, taking each jurisdiction into account, not painting the entire region with one broad brush.

How has the company innovated its products during this time?

History is very telling and has taught us that during tough periods of time, there are two paths that organizations follow. Path 1: Take a tough period as an opportunity to cut costs, get leaner, and meaner. Path 2: We believe in the longevity of this business and growth prospects, and therefore we are going to invest through an economic downturn or shut down. We took path 2. Throughout history, the companies that were willing to invest in tough times have come out stronger and have gained significant share in tough times, and they end up rivaling their competition even more. We were able to take that path is because we had been relatively conservative with our debt levels relative to the size of the business that we run. We are hopeful to show over the next few years what a strategic differentiator this approach will be for business.

What trends (in terms of technology or consumer habits) do you think will start to appear in casino floors in the coming years?

The pandemic has accelerated a couple of trends. The first is cashless. There is a lot of buzz around cashless and the ability for casino operators to remove all money off casino floor. We have seen the evolution with coins to cash (TITO) and was the path towards cashless. While there is a lot of buzz across the industry, what you’ll find is no one has quite figured out how to do it well. You have to remove all of the friction, otherwise players will go to what they know. The second is convergence. There has been a lot of activity from an M&A standpoint. Another form of convergence was the converge of technology. As the world shut down, online gaming emerged even more prominently. We believe convergence relative to online gaming is a pipeline to bring consumers into the physical gaming floor. The physical gaming floor is the white glove and premium experience. While online gaming thrived while people were indoors, when doors opened up physical gaming thrived as well. There can be a symbiotic relationship between the two forms of entertainment, and it will be exciting to see how this will evolve over time.

What lessons do you think the pandemic left for the gaming industry?

This industry is incredibly resilient. Despite all the challenges the pandemic brought, players will play the games they enjoy. They will consume the entertainment that they’ve grown to love. Therefore, as a manufacturer and creator of content, the number one thing we have to be focused on is creating the best content in the industry because players and customers will reward us for doing that. As you will see over the next few years, we are doubling down on reinvesting in in our business and creating content that will live on floors that players will enjoy.
