High-impact tourism, known as luxury or high-end tourism, is experiencing significant growth in the European tourism industry, particularly in Spain. In the last six years, the revenues from this sector have increased by 5% to 8% annually.
Spain has become a key player in this tourism model, successfully attracting a growing number of luxury travelers. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of high-impact tourists increased by 20%, reaching six million last year.
The general interest in luxury tourism is evident, as companies offering luxury products and services have a market value that is 70% higher than other businesses. This type of tourism has a multiplier effect on generating wealth and added value in the Spanish economy.
For example, its impact on culture, shopping, and leisure multiplies the weight of traditional tourists, contributing between €8 and €10 billion. Additionally, spending on gastronomy is four times higher than that of conventional tourism, and expenditures on accommodation, transportation, and real estate investment also see significant increases.
The growth of high-end tourism is partly attributed to the increase in luxury hotels. Between 2015 and 2022, five-star hotels saw a 27% rise, with the majority of openings occurring in the last four years.
High-impact leisure activities have also contributed to the strength of this sector, with the number of Michelin-starred restaurants increasing by 48% in the past seven years. The increase in the flow of high-end tourists has also propelled this boom.
