What are the main benefits of Neccton’s mentor software?
How long is a piece of string? For the operator, mentor has a modular setup so they can use as much or as little of it as they want to. The module that is probably best known is for player protection, and its profile has increased considerably in Europe in the past 12 months. The player protection part of the system identifies early signs of problematic gambling and notifies the operator, who can then contact the player and hopefully intervene before things get bad for a player. This can also prevent players becoming problematic in the first place. mentor also communicates with players directly via pop-up messages. For example, it tells players how much they have lost in a session, reminds players to set limits, and more. This creates cognitive dissonance in the player, and allows them to make better informed choices and avoid some of the pitfalls of problem play, like chasing losses.
Increasingly, operators are using mentor because of the anti-money laundering module; this uses many of the same data points as the problem gambling side but reports them in a different way. Certainly in Europe this has become considerably more important with the EU looking at AML directives right now. Operators are trying to get ahead of the curve and be responsible, and we can help them with that. We believe mentor is the only solution of its kind – the company was started with player protection at the front of our minds, and my background is in the convergence of data science and problem gambling. It’s a great fit for this, as taking a data-driven approach to the issue manes we can detect problems early and intervene with great effect. The system is real-time, AI-based and the license model is based on traffic, so it’s scalable and affordable.
How has the online gambling market evolved during 2020 in Europe, a year marked by the pandemic?
Online gambling in general has seen significant growth – however, the lack of sports events also impacted the online market. We have seen no evidence so far that problematic gambling has increased during the pandemic, which is obviously great news for the industry. I think we will see more interesting numbers for online gaming this summer, as we will see how many players have stayed with online betting, as we have the European Championships, Olympics, Copa America – there’s a lot of sport available for betting. It will also be fascinating to see the effect of this on sportsbooks in the US.
In business terms, what balance do you make for the company for the year 2020?
It was quite a good year for us, with many new customers and existing customers using additional modules. We had several mentor clients start using the AML detection side of the software. What we heard from them was that their teams were already familiar with the interface and the software, so they thought it made sense to extend their licenses with us.
What expectations and projects do you have for this new year?
Over the last couple of years, we have extended the mentor solution, notably with AML. In 2021 we have already onboarded 20 online gambling companies, mostly in Germany and Netherlands. It shows no sign of slowing down, with regular new enquiries. I think when you have companies like Greentube and PlayOJO using your solution across their estates it’s a great advert for your product. We have worked hard to produce what we believe is the best player protection software on the market and our customer base reflects just how good it is.
What are the main technological demands of online gaming companies? Have they changed because of the pandemic?
Larger online gaming companies carry a lot of legacy. Their systems are often outdated, and they have a lot of in-house developed applications. This makes it more difficult for them to adapt. Smaller and younger online gambling companies often set up on new technologies and can thus adapt much more easily and quickly.
