A few weeks after his appointment as new vice president for Latin America of Pragmatic Play, Victor Arias gave an interview to Revista CASINO to talk about his vision for the company and what are the challenges in this new position.
Which will be your responsibilities as the new Vice President for the Latin American market for Pragmatic Play?
First, I would like to say that I am very happy to become part of an amazing company which has shown to the industry a constant growth and which expands quickly to global markets. Luckily, this plan included Latin America and this brought me the opportunity to become part of the Pragmatic’s expansion plans by having the responsibility of creating a local hub and a local team. The main and most important responsibility is to bring our technology and brand into the market, our single API integration with a wide variety of products and a strong technology developed focused on having the best user experience and “the Vegas feeling” when playing our games.
What is your vision of the company?
Pragmatic Play is a professional company with a constant line of growth, completely focused on developing great games for all markets, where investing in user experience is key. The range of products is very diverse, fitting any requirement that operators might have based on their players’ preferences, and I believe that Pragmatic Play aligns to the newest iGaming trends by adopting this multi-vertical approach.
Which are the challenges for you on this new position?
The biggest challenge is to have operators from all the countries within the Latin America’s region offering our content to their customers, challenge that I already have on my daily tasks list since I started. It is a very rewarding process, considering that showing what we have ends with the same reaction from operators: “It is indeed a spectacular range of products”.
Business related, what are your expectations for the rest of 2020?
The current health emergency produced by the pandemic situation has brought a big change for all of us and the world will not be the same from now on. I always say that every crisis comes with opportunities and this is not an exception. All businesses around the world had to focus on one single thing: how to survive with closed doors. There is only one solution to it: online accessibility. With this, I am expecting the online industry to continue growing and companies to invest a lot more in offering the best tools and user experience to their consumers.
Having over 10 years in the industry, what are the main changes you have seen in the Latin American market?
The Latin American market is special. Every country has its own culture: biggest part of Latin America speaks Spanish, but a word can mean something different in Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. It is a beautiful experience to travel from one place to another and adapt to each culture. And it has to be done quickly. There are slight variations, like in Brazil where Portuguese is not exactly the same as the regular language spoken in Portugal. Personally, I think the biggest change happened not in Latin America, but instead in companies that are trying to conquest the market through localization and customization based on countries’ requirements. They finally understood that segmentation is needed when putting together a marketing approach, defining which countries are of actual interest and investing accordingly.
What is your opinion regarding the evolution of the online gaming industry in the region?
Easy: it became one of the most important industries globally, quickly growing and adapting. The penetration of mobile and lessening access to internet are the main trends and gambling is already part of the daily routines of a considerable number of people, so there’s a lot of potential to explore.
What is your opinion about the aims for regulation in markets such as Peru, Brazil and Argentina?
Country regulations are paramount, and I am completely in favor. I have been working closely with regulating entities and I think a great job is continually done, of course there are complications like in Argentina where due to the country’s structure each province has its own regulation structure. We will see what happens with Brazil where there are rumors about a structure getting established before the end of the year. Peru should also be mentioned, where there is also real interest in having something in place. At this point, only time will tell. I think we are all in the same position, waiting for the latest news in this direction and, of course, expecting the best structures: flexible and accessible, allowing operators to offer entertainment in an authorized environment.
Do you think the player behavior for both the land based and the online industry will change after COVID-19?
Possibly yes, but it’s more about the companies that will be forced to behave differently understanding the players’ situation. There will be a before and after COVID-19 landscape for sure, and the biggest challenge is the transition coming up after the pandemic is over: how and when the users will feel safe and comfortable to start going out and perform the normal activities as they used to before all this started.
How will you define innovation in the gaming industry?
That’s a complex concept, but the plan is to adapt our technologies to the market requirement and consumer needs. It is important to align with the latest tendencies, to be able to offer consumers an option regardless of their tastes and preferences. Innovation comes from adaptation, and the latter is driven by change.
