“It was not a secret that the future would be online, but during the pandemic we have found out that the future is now”

Manuel Jimenez, Representative for Colombia at EvenBet Gaming, gave an exclusive interview to Revista CASINO to speak about the company’s projects in the region and his vision on the regulation of online gambling in Latin America.

EvenBet Gaming has appointed Manuel Jimenez as its Representative for Colombia to solidify the poker platform provider’s position in the regulated market and maintain business connections within the LatAm region. In an exclusive interview with Revista CASINO, the executive spoke about the company’s projects in the region and his vision on the regulation of online gambling in Latin America.

What will be your main responsibilities in this new position?

As an official company representative in South and Latin America, I will be responsible for further business development in the region, extending existing successful partnerships, and securing new ones. I am sure that my background in the gaming industry will help EvenBet Gaming to strengthen its reputation and the position in the market. The company is already quite established in Colombia and other countries, which helped it to get SAGSE Awards as the best online poker supplier this year. However, it is crucially important to have a strong team in such complicated markets as LatAm, and I hope that my experience will help EvenBet Gaming to reach even higher.

What is your vision of the Latin American online gaming market?

It is not easy, especially when speaking about the regulatory framework. Right now, Colombia is probably the only well-regulated online gaming hub in the region, and the other countries move to the regulated online gaming market more or less slowly, despite the high demand both from the players and the business. Added to the audience specific, it’s quite logic for EvenBet Gaming – as long as the other companies in industry – to have an established presence in Latin and South America to discover its full potential which is huge. There are millions of players ready to play or already playing at the black and grey markets, so every change in the regulation or the business climate causes a true big bang in the market. Being able to response to changes quickly, using business connections and seizing the opening opportunities: this is the essence of the business development in LatAm.

What projects do you have for 2021 in Colombia and the region?

In 2019, EvenBet Gaming has launched an online poker network adjoining about 15 operators in the moment. Based on the company’s excellent software, it is surely a promising project, and we are planning to develop it further. Except this, we have several standalone partnerships with operators, including such large companies as Apuesta Total, and integration partnerships with casino games developers and vendors. I believe we’re moving in the right direction.

What expectations does the company have for countries that are thinking of regulating online gambling, such as Argentina, Peru and Brazil?

It seems that we all are waiting until the online gaming regulation in Brazil will move forward. This gigantic market has millions of players currently involved in the illegal gaming and betting activities which hurts both interested operators and the country economy because of the taxes lost. The talks about it go on for 4 or 5 years now. Argentina is introducing regulation at the moment, but with province-based licencing and the limited number of licenses the competition in the market is hard, taking into account that at moment almost all the licences issued in Buenos Aires and other attractive country regions belong to the global operators and their partners. Peru, on one hand, offers a welcome compromise: online gaming is not regulated but is not prohibited, so if the operators follow anti-money laundering and taxation policies, the company can work here. On the other hand, the clear regulation could provide the operators with more stability for further development. EvenBet Gaming already has secured its positions in Peru, and we are looking for the opportunity to enter the Argentina market with our software. As for Brazil, we keep hanging in the air, but I hope that not for long now.

How do you think the gaming industry has changed during 2020, a year marked by the pandemic?

It was not a secret that the future of the industry would be online, but during the pandemic we have found out that the future is now. In every market, online gaming was beating record numbers, and it didn’t stop now as the world is going out of the crisis. The players that hadn’t even considered registering at any online casino started to play actively. For some verticals, including online poker, it has become an enourmous boost, both in the interest of player and in the product development. The pandemic has also made us give more attention to responsible gaming, anti-fraud, and risky behavious, as along with the economy problems in the lockdown the people were experiencing financial difficulties.

What do you think will be the demands of the players in this new post-COVID world?

Well, that didn’t change much during the whole history of humanity: the players want easy and satisfying entertainment. If that comes with a chance to win some money, even better. Yet, right now easy means online (as offline is still not available for everyone) and satisfying means engaging. Users want to be engaged, they want as interactive experience as possible.

What lessons do you think the pandemic left for the gaming industry?

A little early to talk about this as the pandemic continues. The main lesson is basically the same as for every other industry: diversify, be ready for challenges, embrace the unpredictability, and you will win.
