Hector Fernandez: “Our ambition is for IGT to become one of the leading gaming companies in Latin America again”

IGT CEO Hector Fernandez outlines the strategy shaping the company’s next chapter and explains why Latin America is central to its growth ambitions.

After leading teams at companies such as Procter & Gamble and Amgen, Hector Fernandez took on one of the biggest challenges of his career: leading IGT into a new chapter at a time when the gaming industry is undergoing profound technological transformation. In an interview with Revista CASINO, Fernandez shares his views on leadership, innovation and the opportunities he sees across Latin America.

Context and vision

After almost a year away from the industry, we saw you at ICE Barcelona. What did returning to the show mean to you?

ICE Barcelona was an extraordinary opportunity to reconnect with our customers. Because of the obligations associated with a non-compete agreement, I had been away from the industry for almost a year, so it was particularly meaningful to see many of our customers again, present IGT’s new strategy and share with them the changes we are putting in place.

It was also an excellent platform to showcase our latest products and discuss this exciting new chapter for the company. What I particularly enjoyed was the truly international nature of the event. We had the opportunity to engage not only with customers from Europe, but also from Asia and Latin America. That allowed us to discuss our strategy with a very diverse range of markets and share our vision for IGT’s future. I often say that we are writing a new book and that we are only on the first chapter. This is not the end of a story; it is the beginning of an entirely new one for our organization.

One of the pillars of your strategy is what you call the “Five Cs.” Could you explain what they represent?

Our strategy is deliberately simple. We believe that doing simple things exceptionally well is the foundation for long-term success.

Our vision is built around five fundamental pillars — the “Five Cs”: Culture, Capabilities, Content, Commercialization and Cash Flow Creation.

Beyond these principles, however, what truly differentiates IGT is the strength of our business portfolio. We operate across four major segments: traditional gaming, gaming machines, digital gaming and other technology-driven verticals. Our vision for the future is to bring these businesses together in a more connected and coordinated way.

When we engage with our customers, we do not want to be seen simply as a supplier. Our goal is to become a trusted strategic partner. That means helping our customers solve problems, connecting solutions across their different operations and removing friction throughout the casino environment.

Career and leadership

Your career has spanned several industries. How has that experience shaped your approach to leadership?

My parents immigrated to the United States when I was just one year old. I grew up in very modest circumstances, and they always taught me that education and hard work were the keys to success.

I began my career in finance and had the opportunity to work for world-class companies such as Procter & Gamble, Amgen and other leading global organizations. Eventually, I moved into the gaming industry, bringing with me the knowledge and experience I had accumulated throughout my career.

Looking back, the first 15 to 20 years of my professional life were deeply rooted in finance and high-performance organizations. The lessons I learned in those environments continue to influence the way I lead today.

Which lessons from other industries have proved most valuable in gaming?

Quite a few. When I first entered the gaming industry, I had virtually no experience with slot machines. However, I quickly realized that this business is fundamentally about technology, entertainment and the ability to deliver exceptional experiences to customers.

One of the first things I did was travel extensively and visit casinos around the world. I wanted to learn directly from operators and players because I knew I was not going to gain that knowledge sitting in an office looking at PowerPoint presentations.

I also realized that the gaming industry offered enormous opportunities for modernization and innovation. My focus became identifying best practices from other industries and applying them in ways that could help move this business forward.

Your leadership philosophy appears to be strongly influenced by your experience outside the gaming industry. How has that perspective benefited IGT?

Working across different industries gives you the ability to challenge assumptions and look at familiar problems from a different perspective.

Every industry has valuable lessons to offer. Rather than simply adopting established practices, I have always believed in asking how we can improve them, simplify them and create greater value for customers.

At IGT, that mindset is helping us build a more connected organization that leverages innovation, technology and collaboration to better serve our customers around the world.

Despite leading one of the world’s largest gaming companies, you often speak about humility, learning and listening. Has that always been your leadership style?

Absolutely. I have always believed that leadership begins with listening. No matter how much experience you have, there is always something to learn from customers, employees and colleagues.

The moment you believe you have all the answers is the moment you stop growing. That is why I encourage curiosity, continuous learning and open dialogue throughout the organization.

Success is never the result of one person. It comes from building great teams, empowering talented people and creating a culture in which everyone is aligned around a common purpose.

The Latin American market

You have a personal connection to Latin America. How do you view the region today?

I was born in Guatemala, so Latin America has always held a very special place in my heart.

Latin America is often spoken about as though it were a single market, but the reality is very different. Mexico is different from Peru, Colombia is different from Brazil, and every country has its own regulatory framework, market dynamics and player preferences. The same is true in Europe and even among the different states in the United States.

That is why our approach is to develop products that can be adapted to the specific needs of each market. It is one of the biggest challenges we face, but also one of the most rewarding aspects of our business.

Where do you see the greatest growth opportunities in the region?

We are seeing tremendous opportunities across Latin America.

Today, we have a strong presence in markets such as Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico and several other countries across the region. Brazil, of course, is particularly attractive given the significant regulatory developments taking place there.

It is a huge country, with a large population and extraordinary long-term potential. We are very excited about the opportunity to participate in that growth and support the market as it continues to evolve.

What I love about Latin America is that you could easily devote all your time exclusively to the region because there are so many opportunities. At the same time, success requires discipline: you have to set priorities and truly understand each market before making decisions.

How does IGT adapt its products to the specific needs of each market?

Every market has unique characteristics. Denominations vary, credit systems are different and, in many cases, player behavior can also be quite different.

Our teams carefully study each market and adapt different aspects of our products to better meet the needs of local customers. In some countries, the adjustments are relatively minor, while in others they are much more extensive.

The key is recognizing that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Success comes from understanding local realities and delivering products that respond to them.

How do you envision IGT’s future in Latin America?

Latin America will always have a special place in my heart. Guatemala is the country where I was born, while the United States is where I grew up and had the privilege of building my career. Both places have helped shape who I am.

Looking ahead, our commitment is clear. We will continue doing everything we can to support our customers, help them succeed and, ultimately, deliver the best possible experiences to players. Our ambition is for IGT to become one of the leading gaming companies in Latin America again, and we are working every day to build that next chapter.

As IGT begins a new chapter under Hector Fernandez’s leadership, his vision extends beyond technology and products. It is rooted in long-term partnerships, operational excellence and a deep understanding of the diverse markets that make up Latin America. For Fernandez, the company’s next stage is not simply about growth, but about creating lasting value for customers across the region.
