“Latin America will be an important part of our future”
Dylan Slaney, SVP Gaming at SG Digital, gave an exclusive interview to Revista CASINO to discuss the vision of the company and its plans for the American continent.
Less than a month after closing the Lightning Box acquisition and continuing on its path to becoming a cross-platform global game organization, Dylan Slaney, SVP Gaming at SG Digital, gave an exclusive interview to Revista CASINO to discuss the vision of the company and its plans for the American continent.
What are the main benefits of the purchase of Lightning Box?
It has been brilliant to see the journey of Lightning Box. We have been working together with the team for many years and their success in growing the business is a testament to their passion and innovative spirit. Lightning Box creates experiences for players that resonate on a global level, and this was a major attraction for Scientific Games. We know them well and the attention they put into their games means that every moment matters for players. This acquisition is about bringing a talented business closer to the SG family, while helping to accelerate their growth.
Could you tell us more about the company’s vision to become a cross-platform global game organization?
OpenGaming today has a number of component parts that allow operators to put the best content in front of players. We have the OpenGaming ecosystem that comprises OGS, our content aggregation platform which is one of the biggest in the world in integrating third-party content. We also produce content in-house through our global studios and additionally, we have companies like Lightning Box that are built into the ecosystem. We also own a digital wallet (PAM) and have front-end services allowing players to connect online. Globally, as long as the market is regulated, we want to provide those services to operator partners. We have seen an acceleration into the digital ecosystem too from social and land-based gaming, so another part of our strategy is in allowing players to move between channels while consuming the content they want to play, when they want to play it.
What do you think are the main features that players are looking for currently in online games?
Innovation is hugely important in any entertainment sector and in online gaming, that can mean anything from a new brand, content or math model. We have seen Megaways perform fantastically well and there is a constant thirst for new experiences. Innovation is something we look for from our partners, as it is so often an integral part of content that resonates with players today. It is also about things players see within land-based casinos. We have seen a huge uptake in the content we bring across from our land-based business and recently had our biggest-ever launch in the US with Marvelous Mouse Coin Combo, which we put in front of digital players for the first time. Our task is to turn the excitement of seeing a great machine title like Marvelous Mouse and making it equally compelling digitally with great UX and UI and intuitive features. This will help bring players back responsibly, while also competing strongly in the broader entertainment vertical that we are now a part of globally.
With vaccination against COVID-19 advancing in Latin America, what expectations does Scientific Games have for the land-based gaming market in the region?
In every area of the world, the onset of COVID has had a massive impact on physical retail and entertainment. As vaccination rates have picked up, various regions have started to come back on stream. With digital solutions kicking off in certain regions, the re-opening of casinos has given consumers a choice of how they want to play. The iGaming and land-based casino business is no different to any other sector in the longer-term impact of COVID is yet to be seen fully. We will have to wait to find out exactly how comfortable people feel in land-based environments in different regions globally as we return to a “new normal” – whatever that looks like.
With the confirmation of the return of face-to-face trade shows in America such as G2E in the United States and GAT Expo in Colombia, what are the company’s plans for the American continent?
The American continent as a whole is very important to the growth and success of SG Digital and Scientific Games from a digital point of view. We recently launched in Latin America for the first time, and we are live with a couple of operators in Colombia. Others are now integrated into the OpenGaming ecosystem. Everyone is focused on the US given its growth potential – Michigan is almost at the same market size as New Jersey, which is fantastic to see – and you need a crystal ball to work out how many more states will come online in the next couple of years. That success so far has been driven by the rollout of sport, but we anticipate that many more states will come online from an iGaming perspective. We also have to look at Canada, which has been a hugely important part of our business for a number of years through partnerships with BCLC, Loto-Québec, Atlantic Lottery Corporation and Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation. The Americas are hugely important, and we will be there at G2E. I have certainly missed going to Las Vegas and seeing people face to face, so it’s definitely in my diary.
What are the company’s plans for this year’s edition of G2E?
Scientific Games will be at G2E. Whether that will just be our US-based people, due to travel restrictions, remains to be seen. If the travel corridor opens up then we will be there in force, while abiding by all COVID regulations. I’m hopeful we can get to meet our customers and partners for the first time in way too long.
In commercial terms, what has been the company’s balance in Latin America during the first half of 2021?
We only launched in Latin America digitally in June of this year whereas obviously from a land-based perspective, it is a long-standing major market for us. We know there is lots of potential there and that there are lots of operators examining their growth strategies. Across the whole Scientific Games ecosystem, Latin America will be an important part of our future as new regulations come in and further digital opportunities start to exist. In the next two to three years, we will see a big uptick in digital convergence. From an OpenGaming point of view we have a fantastic, proven product to offer to operators in the region as and when that process occurs.
What lessons do you think the pandemic left for the gaming industry?
For me, it’s about collaboration. As an industry we have been very used to doing business face to face. For the last 18 months, as partners, teams and individuals, we have had to find different ways of communicating and yet, during this time the industry has continued to grow. We do have regulatory headwinds to consider, and more markets are exerting stricter controls. Outside these issues the industry faces, though, I have loved to see how we have found new ways to continue to collaborate and innovate as an industry. I feel I have forged great relationships with people I have never met physically, and we have had hundreds of people start work with us who have not had the chance to meet. Despite that, as a business and as an industry, we have found new ways to continue growing.
