“The crisis has revealed how important it is to conduct your business in the online world”
Ondrej Lapides, CEO of Tom Horn Gaming, gave an interview to Revista CASINO to analyze how the market must adapt to continue working.
In the midst of a year that he is going through an unprecedented social situation due to the coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19), Ondrej Lapides, CEO of Tom Horn Gaming, gave an interview to Revista CASINO to analyze how the market should adapt to continue working.
What analysis do you make of the evolution of the online gambling in general?
Over the years there have been significant changes in the gambling industry. Regulation of gambling is, without doubt, one of the key trends that has changed the face of online gaming. Transparency, trust and protection of the most vulnerable segments of players have become the backbone of the industry in recent years and this tendency towards a more secure gaming environment will only become more prominent going forward. The expansion of the sports betting market, rise of new technologies, marketing and player incentives have also been evolving at breakneck speed to keep pace with the overall development of the gaming industry and the growth in demand for more thrilling and original player experience.
How has online bettor engagement evolved in the first six months of the year? What betting verticals have grown in this period?
The first six months of 2020 have been dominated by the “Great Lockdown” and a sudden halt of activity in many industries. Online gaming, unlike other sectors, has not been hard hit by the pandemic as much. It is true that we were pulled out of our comfort zones but the time during the lockdown allowed us to revisit our business strategies, operating models and approaches. We have realized that a location is no longer an obstacle for a successful operation and embraced the benefits of remote working in a new creative way. All online gaming verticals, including online casino, live casino, have been thriving during the pandemic. Sports betting, given its dependence on live events, has lagged behind and sports betting operators had to find new ways to engage and retain their players. Virtual sports betting has opened a whole new avenue for operators and betters alike and I believe this new vertical will grow from strength to strength going forward. All in all, during the pandemic we’ve seen either an increase or no change in productivity of gaming companies and players have exhibited a similar interest in playing casino games or live casino games.
What can online betting operators and developers continue to do to continue to attract players?
Lockdowns might become normality in the months to come and the gaming industry has to develop more creative approaches to attract players. Localization has always been one of the most important aspects of gaming products. With the industry continuously tapping into new markets it is of utmost importance to speak the language of your customers. Therefore, localization, not only from the perspective of language but also themes and stories, should become a centerpiece of one’s business approach. In addition, new technology and growingly engaging promotional tools will define the industry going forward.
In terms of business, what are your expectations for the rest of 2020?
The COVID-19 crisis has revealed how important it is to conduct your business in the online world. I believe we will see the rise of new regulated markets as a safe and transparent gaming environment will become of paramount importance in a growingly competitive online environment. New markets will mean more new operators who will try to be the first to get the biggest possible share of the market to capitalize on new opportunities. Tom Horn Gaming will continue in its growth strategy, with a solid pipeline of new business partnerships to be brought to full fruition in the coming months. I believe we have exciting times ahead of us. There will be many challenges, and many technological advances that will take the industry to the next level and only the most agile and creative businesses will survive the heightened competition for market share and human resources.
How would you define “innovation” in the gaming industry?
New ideas, creative thoughts, technology and solutions that will fast-forward the gaming industry to new more immersive levels of player experience.
